    Characterization of the atmospheric depth profile using the ground-level temperature: The case of MalargĂĽe, Argentina

    We present a study of the atmospheric depth profile and the dependence with its characteristic parameters. We introduce a new model, named GAMMA, based on a parameterization that allows us to obtain the atmospheric depth profile specifying only one simple physical parameter, namely the temperature at ground. The GAMMA model consists of a multilayer representation of the atmosphere that can be adjusted conveniently via constrained fits that are built to ensure interlayer continuity for both atmospheric depth and density profiles. Our analysis uses experimental data collected at MalargĂĽe, Argentina by meteorological radiosondes. The GAMMA model can reproduce the averaged atmospheric depth profiles in all the cases available for analysis with good accuracy.     Strict calculation of the light statistics at the output of a travelling wave optical amplifier

    Synthesis using speaker adaptation from speech recognition DB

    This paper deals with the creation of multiple voices from a Hidden Markov Model based speech synthesis system (HTS). More than 150 Catalan synthetic voices were built using Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and speaker adaptation techniques. Training data for building a Speaker-Independent (SI) model were selected from both a general purpose speech synthesis database (FestCat;) and a database design ed for training Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems (Catalan SpeeCon database). The SpeeCon database was also used to adapt the SI model to different speakers. Using an ASR designed database for TTS purposes provided many different amateur voices, with few minutes of recordings not performed in studio conditions. This paper shows how speaker adaptation techniques provide the right tools to generate multiple voices with very few adaptation data. A subjective evaluation was carried out to assess the intelligibility and naturalness of the generated voices as well as the similarity of the adapted voices to both the original speaker and the average voice from the SI model.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Practical method for modelling the nonlinear behaviour of a travelling wave semiconductor optical amplifier

    The authors present a simple model of a travelling wave semiconductor optical amplifier with an appreciable degree of saturation. The model uses a particular way of linearising the total carrier recombination R(N) to find useful expressions for the saturation parameter and/or the carrier lifetime.     Testing Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium: an Objective Bayesian Analysis

    We analyze the general (multiallelic) Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium problem from an objective Bayesian testing standpoint. We argue that for small or moderate sample sizes the answer is rather sensitive to the prior chosen, and this suggests to carry out a sensitivity analysis with respect to the prior. This goal is achieved through the identification of a class of priors specifically designed for this testing problem. In this paper we consider the class of intrinsic priors under the full model, indexed by a tuning quantity, the training sample size. These priors are objective, satisfy Savage’s continuity condition and have proved to behave extremely well for many statistical testing problems. We compute the posterior probability of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium model for the class of intrinsic priors, assess robustness over the range of plausible answers, as well as stability of the decision in favor of either hypothesis.Bayes factor; Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium; Intrinsic prior; Model posterior probability; Robustness.

    Second harmonic generation from metallic arrays of rectangular holes

    The generation process of second harmonic (SH) radiation from holes periodically arranged on a metal surface is investigated. Three main modulating factors affecting the optical response are identified: the near-field distribution at the wavelength of the fundamental harmonic, how SH light couples to the diffraction orders of the lattice, and its propagation properties inside the holes. It is shown that light generated at the second harmonic can excite electromagnetic modes otherwise inaccessible in the linear regime under normal incidence illumination. It is demonstrated that the emission of SH radiation is only allowed along off-normal paths precisely due to that symmetry. Two different regimes are studied in the context of extraordinary optical transmission, where enhanced linear transmission either occurs through localized electromagnetic modes or is aided by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). While localized resonances in metallic hole arrays have been previously investigated, the role played by SPPs in SH generation has not been addressed so far. In general, good agreement is found between our calculations (based on the finite difference time domain method) and the experimental results on localized resonances, even though no free fitting parameters were used in describing the materials. It is found that SH emission is strongly modulated by enhanced fields at the fundamental wavelength (either localized or surface plasmon modes) on the glass metal interface. This is so in the transmission side but also in reflection, where emission can only be explained by an efficient tunneling of SH photons through the holes from the output to the input side. Finally, the existence of a dark SPP at the fundamental field is identified through a noninvasive method for the first time, by analyzing the efficiency and far-field pattern distribution in transmission at the second harmonic.Comment: This paper was published in JOSA B and is made available as an electronic reprint with the permission of OSA.
